Degree Program

Osaka University has built an organizational education and research guidance system across disciplinary boundaries and established a doctoral education program for students to become globally active leaders with broad perspectives and creativity spanning industry, academia, and government. These programs are in addition to the doctoral education curriculum in the students’ home graduate school.

Curriculum Features

To train professionals who hold a doctoral degree and actively contribute to society, we offer a distinctive curriculum such as courses to gain knowledge in a wide range of fields outside the students’ specialized field, overseas training/internships, and courses incorporating industry standpoints.

The WISE Program and the Program for Leading Graduate Schools are primarily five-year consistent education programs. (There are exceptions due to the special selection and target subjects of specialization.)

Student Support

According to its guidelines, each program offers a variety of support for studying in a doctoral program. The support includes financial assistance, training outside university/research activities, and a mentor system. Support details and conditions differ in each program. Program enrollment

To enroll in a program, student must submit an application within the application period for each program and pass an exam. Students may apply to one or more programs. Each program has its own eligible subjects of specialization and graduate schools, application periods, selection criteria, and start dates.   • Cross-Boundary
    Innovation Program

    In response to social demands and in an effort to help students develop into creative global leaders with comprehensive view who can actively participate in the industrial, government, academic, and private sectors, Osaka University has offered the CBI Program, an interdisciplinary doctoral degree program, since 2012.

  • Interdisciplinary Program for
    Biomedical Sciences

    IPBS is an interdepartmental graduate training program in biomedical sciences. IPBS faculty members are drawn from the graduate schools of Medicine, Pharmacological Sciences, Engineering, Frontier Biosciences, Science, Dentistry and also from pharmaceutical industries including Chugai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd and Shionogi & Co., Ltd.

  • Interactive Materials Science Cadet

    The IMSC Program aims to train program students as "Cadets for Materials Science" who will drive innovations in materials science research and development in a wide range of sectors spanning industry, government, and academia. In addition to regular lectures and research in each field, the program provides special courses to offer the broadest possible array of career paths and nurture individuals who will be able to take on leadership roles in society.

  • Humanware Innovation Program

    This degree program provides intensive interdisciplinary studies (Seido Jukugi: in-depth discussion) to foster leaders who can construct flexible, robust, and sustainable systems that support an ever-changing social environment by introducing an entirely new concept: humanware.

    Biomedical Entrepreneurship and Innovation

    The mission of biomedical research is to elucidate mechanisms of life activities in humans. To this end, the harmonious circulation and evolvement of the “Research and Development Ecosystem” is an absolute necessity. In this ecosystem, impactful research outcomes produced in academia are implemented into society under sound ethical principles for building a prosperous society. Moreover, further research is conducted in academia on new findings and missions arise through the implementations. The key to improving the ecosystem is to nurture professionals who can rotate the ecosystem.
